Why Radiant underfloor heating (UFH)?

Background

Radiant has been at the forefront of the underfloor heating business since 1992. As consultants we have helped develop the technical support for companies such as Uponor and Unipipe. We were also a consulting partner in the creation of the BSRIA designers guide for underfloor heating.

Products

Radiant has formed partnerships with international manufacturers to develop a full range of products for the UFH market. The Radiant Radfloor system is fully compatible with our solar, heat pumps and storage tanks. This gives unrivalled system integration because everything is manufactured to our design requirements.

Design

The components within the Radiant Radfloor system are fully integrated for either a ‘stand alone’ circuit or as part of a larger hybrid system. The Radiant Radfloor room controls operate the boiler/heat plant only when one or more floor loops are operating, thus saving energy and unnecessary heat plant cycling.

Radiant ‘Radfloor’ has four main components, the pipe, the manifold, the fixing system and the room controls.

The Radfloor Pipe
Strong and form stable yet flexible and easy to use, our multi layered pipe is the perfect solution for underfloor heating. It is made of cross-linked polyethylene with the aluminium longitudinally welded by ultra sonic wave in an overlapping method. This 16mm pipe is so strong and resilient that it can withstand temperatures of up to 95°C at 10 bar pressure. There are no joints in the floor as the pipe runs in a continuous coil giving users that extra confidence against leaks. For some special floor types we may use different pipe sizes to suit that particular application. Our overlay or floating floor uses 14mm pipe to the same specification. Larger commercial applications may also use 20mm pipe.

The Manifold
A solid one piece nickel plated brass body with flow meters, balancing valves, isolating valves fitted with thermometers, automatic air vent, pressure gauge, fill and drain valves and sound damped mounting brackets. Balancing the floor system is very easy because of the large flow meters. Once set, these flow meters are then locked to enable trouble free operation.

The manifold can have a pump control pack (pump and mixing valve) directly fitted or be part of a larger centrally pumped system.

The Fixing System
For most applications a simple push-in plastic barbed staple is used to hold the pipe to the floor insulation. However there may be certain floor types that require a ‘clip rail’ to hold the pipe. On suspended timber floors a different clipping method is used as shown in floor types.

Room Controls
The use of room temperature control for underfloor heating is a personal choice. You may choose to have one simple control point for the entire area or controls in every room.

If the floor type is the same for the entire area then just one central control can determine when the heating runs and the temperature of the area. The entire floor will heat up or cool down at the same rate. However, a greater degree of control may be desired to improve comfort levels and room usage. Should this be the case then each room can have its own thermostat control.

Types of Controls

There are two ways to control the underfloor heating when using multi room thermostats.

The first of these is to use a central time clock or programmer to control when the heating runs. With this method the room control would be a temperature controlling thermostat.

The second way is to use a programmable room thermostat that determines both the temperature of the room (or area) and when the heating runs.

Thermostats that require a separate timer or programmer
these are ideal when using a heat pump with economy 7 or economy 10 tariff.

basic room thermostat

Standard Basic Room Thermostat
Dial type thermostat with a built in reduced temperature (night set back) feature that resets the room temperature to a lower level when the heating is off.  Available with a remote temperature sensor for use with wet areas or to control the temperature of the floor as well as the room.  Can also be supplied with a tamperproof cover for use in public areas or where children have access.

Deluxe Basic Room Thermostat
Dial type thermostat with a built in reduced temperature (night set back) feature that resets the room temperature to a lower level when the heating is off.  Available in a large variety of colour finishes to suit room décor.

digital room thermostat

Digital Room Thermostat
LCD display with a built in reduced temperature (night set back) feature that resets the room temperature to a lower level when the heating is off.

Thermostats that do not require separate timer or programmer

standard programmable room thermostat

Standard Programmable Room Thermostat
LCD display with 7 day programming and duel temperature settings for normal use and night set back. Set as many switching periods as you like for each day of the week. 3 Modes of operation are:

  1. Auto – follows the set on/set back times you can program for each day of the week
  2. Continuous ‘On’ – runs 24/7 at the normal use temperature
  3. Continuous ‘Off’ – runs 24/7 at the night set back temperature

In Auto mode the switching period can be advanced to the next period (off to on or on to off).  Also the room temperature can be adjusted for the present switching period but automatically reverts to the set temperatures for the next day.
The display shows day, time, mode, room temperature and whether it is on or off.

Bringing together two or more forms of heat generation such as a heat pump and a boiler. Each generator has its own requirements that must be accommodated in the overall design. It is not straightforward to link different heat generators and great care must be taken to get this right. Done correctly, many forms of both heat generation and heat distribution can be successfully combined to give truly energy efficient system.
